چکیده

In order to comply with more opportunistic and transient service requirements, many research literatures have paid attention to an approach called spectrum pooling. If we imagine a scenario in which wireless service providers (WSPs) manage the spectrum pool, the radio spectrum itself will be traded as done in a market-based scenario, and moreover, every WSP will likely require new strategies in order to make more profits under such dynamic service requirements. Up to now, most researches have concentrated on investigating the inter-WSP strategies such as market equilibrium under the consideration of noncooperative or cooperative WSPs. In this paper, we direct our attentions to an intra-WSP strategy: a WSP coordinates the spectrum order in order to minimize its cost. To this end, we deploy a probabilistic inventory model that helps WSPs to determine economic order quantity and reorder point yielding minimum total expected cost. The total cost is composed of ordering cost, holding cost, and stockout cost. We believe that this model will be the first investigation of intra-WSP strategy that manages and estimates economic aspects of the spectrum pooling. 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Hardware Implementation of Filtering Based Sidelobe Suppression for Spectrally Agile Multicarrier based Cognitive Radio Systems

Due to the ever increasing dependency on existing wireless technologies and the growing usage of sophisticated wireless devices, the demand for bandwidth is rising exponentially. Also, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has reserved a considerable amount of spectrum for licensed users. As a result, the unlicensed spectrum usage is constrained to the overcrowded unlicensed spectrum. Var...

Dynamic Pricing of Wireless Internet Based on Usage and Stochastically Changing Capacity

Inspired by new developments in dynamic spectrum access, we study the dynamic pricing of wireless internet access when demand and capacity (i.e., available bandwidth) are both stochastic. The demand for wireless internet access has increased enormously in recent years. However, the spectrum available to wireless service providers is limited. The industry has thus expanded conventional license-b...

The Cost of Free Spectrum

There has been growing interest in increasing the amount of radio spectrum available for unlicensed broadband wireless access. That includes “prime” spectrum at lower frequencies, which is also suitable for wide area coverage by licensed cellular providers. While additional unlicensed spectrum would allow for market expansion, it could influence competition among providers and increase congesti...

Dynamic spectrum allocation with admission control based on cognitive radio for QoS support in multiple wireless network

Cognitive radio is an emerging technology in wireless access, aimed at vastly improving the way radio spectrum is utilized. In this article, we investigate the performance improvement gained by applying cognitive radio to a multiple wireless service providers (WSPs). We consider several WSPs and two types of users: primary (licensed) and secondary (unlicensed) users. Two different schemes are p...

Efficiency gains from using a market approach to spectrum management

This paper is concerned with the merits of employing market forces to address the issues of wireless spectrum congestion and the allocation of spectrum between firms seeking licensed and unlicensed spectrum rights. We show that when unlicensed spectrum is assigned to all competing users during periods of excess demand an inefficient outcome related to the ‘‘Tragedy of the Commons” is likely to ...
